Can This Even Be Called Music? Microtonal rock band Ilevens, led by the mind of Brendan Byrnes, is one of the only examples I know of of a microtonal band ready for live performances. They use 22 notes per octave instruments and have released a bunch of demos that were sung in a made-up language that I’ll refer to as ilevian from now on, but they seem to have gone back to good ol’ English for this song.

I listen to the sound of thrashing water I hope I’m not far down I gaze up to sun rays, prismatic A threshold I’m not in Big waves soak up and choke and toss me ‘round Pass by I stroke up, I’m lashing out for light Vague sounds against the imagery now, there’s now complicity down here Round and round Spin round it’s not a mystery now, I’ve found simplicity down here Round and round Held down without the sympathy now, I’m getting flipped round and round Round and round I slip into kaleidoscopic visions, find myself indifferent To what is the crushing solution, volition signs grow dim Big waves soak up and choke and toss me ‘round Pass by I stroke up, I’m lashing out for light This is overarching now the pulses slow down In this undulating space I am alone now, alive I’m suspended in this place, alive Vague sounds against the imagery now, there’s now complicity down here Round and round Spin round it’s not a mystery now, I’ve found simplicity down here I see now There’s no complicity now There is no sympathy now I’ve found simplicity down here Drowned, drowned

We’ve yet to assimilate or synergize, assume another mind But soon we’ll pattern types in one another, sing it through a simple lullaby My mind knows it’s prototypical, eyesight shows me what could be installed But we’ve yet to assimilate or synergize, and there’s a reason why We say yes, to synthesize our own We say yes, aligned We say yes, to simplify our role To synthesize our own, to wipe us right out If you say so, then shout out Make way or face what you doubt Vacate or reach out Erase those without a doubt See it through a surrogate of enterprise A scintillating life The truth is nothing matters once it’s over Vacates through the cities of our mind My mind knows it’s prototypical, eyesight shows me what could be installed We’ve yet to assimilate or synergize, and there’s a reason why If you say so, then shout out Make way or face what you doubt Vacate or reach out Erase those without a doubt Make way of face what you doubt Vacate or reach out Raised heads for now, for now
